Thoughts for the weeks of....
May 31-June 5, 2021 AND June 6-10, 2021 I hope everyone had a lovely holiday weekend and found some ways to honor those who served and sacrificed their lives for our nation. Despite being a little chilly, the weather seemed pleasant for outdoor gatherings and celebrations with friends and family.
This week, we continue to wrap up and celebrate with students. On Wednesday morning, we will celebrate together with bagels and fruit while we work together on tentative placements. I want to thank Laura Wilczynski and Laura Laatsch for their work putting together Virtual Field Day and the Virtual Art Show. Also, please extend your congratulations to Kelly Behnke who, pending board approval, has been hired as a permanent staff member! Congratulations, Kelly! We are so glad to have you join our team! Everyday we have left together is a gift and I hope you spend it looking for small ways to celebrate one another, appreciate one another, and make special memories with your students. This has been a challenging year and I thank you all for all you have done to work as a team and make the best of a challenging situation! THANK YOU! |

May 23-29, 2021 I hope you had a wonderful weekend! It has been so heartening to see all of the Prom photos with so many of our Woodland Meadows alum all dressed up and celebrating the send of their senior year! I know many of you will be attending the High School Graduation ceremonies. They have been careful to follow the WCHD mitigation efforts by having two separate ceremonies. Traditions and milestones are important. I am proud of the team for putting together these wonderful events in a safe manner. The elementary admin are working this week to discuss the C19 restrictions in the hopes of continuing our third grade milestone "Clap Out". We will be looking creatively to try and create this event for our students in a safe manner. More info to come.... As we look forward to next year, Megan and Nicole are looking to take a break from the morning announcements. If you are interested, this is a schedule B stipend position and Megan and Nicole are willing to train and support their successor! A great opportunity to get creative with leadership opportunities for our students! Enjoy the week ahead and cherish the time with your community of learners. Have a great week ahead! |

Thoughts for the week of....
May 16-22, 2021 The weather is forecasted to look a little more summer-like in the week ahead! It seems that summer is nearing and "End of Year" traditions are beginning. If you are planning outdoor End of year picnics please add them to our school calendar. Also, if you will be using the playground, please select a time where it is unscheduled and email to let everyone know it will be unavailable for extra recess at that time. The closing of the school-year is bittersweet. There is joy and excitement for the summer days ahead, but sadness in saying goodbye to the students and the classroom community you've worked so hard at building. Each classroom has a unique dynamic that is special and will never be the same. Each learner, a precious child that make up the character of that environment. Cherish these last weeks together. Keep in mind a lens of cultural responsiveness, knowing that the end of the year brings anxiety for many students. Not all students have exciting vacations planned. Many may be nervous about food scarcity during summer and nervous about losing the safety of the school routine. You may be the only adult the child can count on and trust. They may be fearful of losing that relationship with you. Along with the bittersweet end of the year, I have a very bittersweet staffing change to announce. Our amazing Angie Bekkala has accepted a position at the high school next year. We are terribly sad to be losing her, but super excited for her as she takes this next step. Congratulations, Angie! |

Thoughts for the week of....
May 9-16, 2021 Happy Mother's Day to all of our WM mommies! We know this day can be full of joy for many, but also full of pain for others. We send our love to all of you- those who are celebrating and those who may be hurting. Last week was quite a week, and I quickly learned that I had neglected to update all of you that one of our paras, Tori, has resigned. We are working on filling her position, but do not have anyone on a regular basis. We will be posting for a sub daily. If you have some time in your day and are able to check in with Melissa Waltz to offer any support, I sure it would be well-received.
I was humbled by the incredible show of appreciation from our staff, students and families. While it's easy to get caught up in our challenges, last week reminded me just how much we have for which to be thankful! It's a gift to work in such a supportive community. Have a great week ahead. Remember to capture the good stuff, let the frustrations roll off. Find the JOY in all that we do and know that you are making a difference and that your hard work does not go unnoticed. |

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! |
FIELD DAY INFORMATION - MAY 28
- The PE team will provide 16-20 stations organized by varying difficulty so there are many things to choose from for all learners. Each station will have written, audio, and visual instruction/demonstration as well as equipment requirements. There will be a scorecard that students can choose to use to keep track of their day.
- There will be a master list of equipment ideas for families to gather sent out the week leading up to Field Day.
We will have an introductory video with all PE teachers represented to explain how to use and navigate that station slide deck.
We also have 4 external guest stations that kids can view and follow along with – Master Teboe, Gym America, Kids Zumba, and AFC Ann Arbor (semi-professional soccer team).
A SAMPLE timeline of the day would be:
9-9:30: Morning meeting with classroom teachers
9:30-10: Families view an introductory video, explore stations and collect equipment
10-12:30: Doing the stations, filling out scorecard if using, and visiting our guest links
12:30: Field Day ends, kids can work on any other necessary classwork

May 2-8, 2021 What a beautiful Sunday and great way to begin Staff Appreciation Week! We have been through a challenging year, and it is your professionalism and dedication that have gotten us through! Bravo to you! We will be celebrating this week with gift cards from our PTA, and a personal thank you from your very appreciative principal in the form of a Panera lunch on Wednesday and new staff T-shirts for our incredible team! If you missed the sign-up for lunch, please reach out to me directly so you can be recognized! More celebrations! Last week our BOE unanimously selected Dr. Steve Laatsch for our next Superintendent! We had scheduled a building introductory tour for the candidates Mon, Tue and Wed. We will no longer need introductory tours.... BUT Steve will be coming by Monday at 2:30 for a "celebration tour"! We will walk through and try to touch base with everyone for a moment to give you an opportunity to congratulate Steve! We are getting close to the time when we need to print our placement cards. Placement Information Due in Illuminate by May 21st
Finally, some sad district news. 5th grader at Heritage, "Mighty" Moe Jaber lost his battle with Cerebral Palsy over the weekend. Message being sent to Heritage students. Our condolences to this Saline family. Have a great week ahead, and know how much you are appreciated! |

April 25-May 1, 2021 Another great week approaches! I hope you had a great weekend! As we continue to move forward, in many ways, things are starting to feel a little more "normal". It's spring, and even though this group of students haven't been together for long, little playground issues are beginning to erupt. This is a great time of year to review our habits that focus on inter-dependence and social interaction: Seek First to Understand, Think Win-Win, and Synergize. Take some time this week to discuss how these habits might look in playground interactions. As we supervise outdoor time, be sure to spread out and be available to assist with problem solving as we model these habits in action. Have a great week ahead! April is supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb, and we are forecasted to have some lovely weather! Enjoy it! Feel free to get outdoors for learning! Camp stools are available on the stage, the pavilion is a great spot or enjoy the shade of tree. Woodland Meadows is a great place to learn inside and out! Thank you for all of your continued efforts supporting your students and your colleagues through tumultuous times. No one is alone in this and we will continue to support one another through it all! Finally, next week we celebrate Staff Appreciation week! I will be providing a Panera lunch again- box lunch this year! I will send a form so you can select you preferred items. And.... I am gifting our annual staff shirts again, just waiting for them to arrive! I appreciate each and every one of you! |

Thoughts for the week of....
April 18-24, 2021 Time is flying by and we are starting to catch up on some traditions that were put on hold. This past Friday, virtual third graders made their mark on our hallowed halls. This coming Friday, our virtual fourth graders, who did not have an opportunity to make their handprint will do so. In-person third graders will begin this process the week of April 26th, and the following week we will wrap up with the in-person fourth grade. What a success! The district resumes 4 day a week instruction for secondary and we continue to implement mitigation strategies that are working. Our students are happy and learning at school. You have done an incredible job of meeting their needs, creatively planning engaging and fun lessons, and keeping them safe while learning during a pandemic. There is so much to celebrate here! And, all around us we will hear- "what about the gaps?" "How do we recover learning loss?" No one is mentioning the GAINS. That's right- I said it. This group of learners has had to adapt, be flexible, motivated, self- directed, integrate technology, think critically, etc. Sound familiar? It's all of the "soft skills" that we have learned are so valuable in designing our compass! This is not a one year relationship. It's an ongoing 13 year+ cycle. These students will catch up on content. We will adjust tier one and cover the losses over time. Our ID team led us in a meeting on Friday, where we read a great article about the future of education- Read it Here. I found it uplifting because we are already doing so many of the strategies they have deemed important- building relationships, and creating fun and engaging lessons- making learning FUN! Keep up your hard work and making a difference in the lives of those very special young people in your classrooms. YOU matter! |

Thoughts for the week of....
April 11-17, 2021 Wow! I am so impressed with the accomplishments of our Leader in Me action teams! We are continuing to make progress and gain momentum in our efforts to "leaderize" the building operations as well as continue to teach the 7 Habits in situations that our students encounter. Bravo to all of you for your efforts. We will be presenting to the FSAS in May about all of our accomplishments. I will also be providing a building tour to the Superintendent candidates, and the Leader in Me work will be a point of pride! This week we had a few COVID19 positive cases that have led to quarantines of a few individual students and two whole classes. The numbers may seem alarming when one looks at the district dashboard, but rest assured, this is to be expected with students in full capacity. In districts that have been in full capacity, this is what quarantining numbers look like. (Livingston county numbers have looked like this since they went full capacity in August). So, while this is new for us, it is to be expected during this pandemic as we continue to quarantine to mitigate the spread of COVID19. We have a great week ahead of us. I want to remind you to take time to celebrate the small successes- we see them everyday! You are doing great work and our students are benefitting daily. Have a great week ahead- and remember you are a ROCKSTAR! I appreciate you very much. |

April 4-10, 2021 What a beautiful Easter Sunday! I hope you had a wonderful Spring Break and found it rejuvenating and refreshing! We are just starting the last leg of the race. Spring is a busy and exciting time in the schools as we begin thinking about end of year activities.
End-of-Year picnics have been discussed. Though we have not had field trips this year, walking trips to local parks will be allowed for end of year picnics held outdoors in local parks. Busing is not available so if you choose to schedule a walking trip, be sure to prepare a plan in case there is inclement weather. We expect increased quarantining. As of now, the plan is that work for quarantined students would be handled just as it was for absences prior to the pandemic. We are not "zooming in" to live classes at the elementary level. If there is wide-spread quarantining in the class, the entire class would go to remote learning. Please remember it is important to have a seating chart, or seating system for contact tracing- especially for 2nd and 3rd grades. Take time to welcome students back and reteach the expectations. Go slow to go fast, because we have a long road ahead. Please use SWIS forms to document behaviors and contact families as appropriate. SWIS forms or parent contacts should be completed by the adult in charge at the time of the occurrence. Have a great week ahead! |

March 21-27, 2021 We did it! Dora remembers to take time to celebrate successes and we should, too! Last week we welcomed back our students in full capacity and overall it went well. We may have hit some bumps in the road but we worked together to solve them. Bravo to each and every Woodland team member, we couldn't have done it without you! For our virtual teachers, thank you for all you are doing to meet the needs of our students remotely! This has truly been a team effort and what we've been able to accomplish is remarkable.
This week, we continue to reteach expectations as bringing all the students together has highlighted the need to review behavior expectations. While we celebrate our success, it is important we continue our work of being culturally responsive. Here is a great article regarding responding to Anti-Asian Racism from The Reading and Writing Project. Please take time to read through it. We all need to stand against hate. Also here is a link to a blog listing 40 Asian American books for kids. |

Thoughts for the week of....
March 14-20, 2021 It's important that we acknowledge that we have just marked the one year anniversary of the start of this pandemic. A year ago, we moved from thoughts of an extended spring break, to having no end in sight. Many of us lost loved ones to this virus, and still more lost once-in-a-lifetime events that could not take place. It's important that we recognize the grief of our losses. We must also recognize the accomplishments and hope that is on the horizon! As I type this, we are prepared to welcome back in full capacity our in-person learners on Monday! Do not overlook what a wonderful success this actually is! Many of us did not think this would happen during this school year! Our scientists have developed, not just one, but THREE effective vaccines! Staff members who have elected to vaccinate have all received at least the first dose, many are completely vaccinated! Governor Whitmer announced the probability of vaccine availability for those who want it, age 16 and older! Educators have reshaped the landscape around teaching and learning. "Zoom" has a new meaning and we have learned to better leverage technology to work in our favor. Conferences from our homes, webinars reaching the masses, and the ability to target small groups for intervention, instruction and even social events all remotely! We should also recognize the many lessons learned and the unforeseen gifts the pandemic brought. We learned to appreciate time spent with our families and the warmth and love that fills our homes. We learned to appreciate the simple things: the wholesome fun of a board-game, the pride in a finished puzzle, the strategy of a card game, and the privilege of choosing between ten varieties of toilet tissue in your local store! We also shared some experiences, though we were apart. Many of us binged on "Bridgerton", "Schitt's Creek", "Ozark" and more. As a society, shared experience links us and helps us to feel connected. We found ways to laugh together as new memes traveled over the interwebs. And... TikTok! Need I say more? We offered support as we reminded each other about self-care. We grew together, as individuals, and as a society. Sure, there were growing pains, but we grew and are stronger for it. I was filled with pride as I walked the building Friday evening, seeing your classrooms prepared and ready for "yet another" first day! Bravo to all of you! You inspire me and I am honored to serve as your principal. Now.... LET'S DO THIS! |

Thoughts for the week of....
March 8-12, 2021 The Weekly "Buzz" We are really being teased by some spring-like weather! Enjoy it while we can, but don't be fooled! Those tricky leprechauns of March usually bring some wintry surprises before spring truly arrives. I hope everyone was able to enjoy this lovely weekend! This week we will finalize our preparations for the return of full classes and a 4day in-person week beginning March 15th. Fridays will remain asynchronous, with the exception of a morning meeting as we have been doing all year. The morning meeting is a good opportunity to ensure all of your students know what is expected of them on the asynchronous day, take attendance, and further highlight that it is a day of school. I think there was some misinformation about the morning meeting on Friday and I wanted to clarify with everyone the expectation. Further, as many of you have seen, asynchronous Fridays are being scrutinized, so please work with me and your grade level chair so we can better communicate their value to the community. Grade level chairs, feel free to email me some short bullet points of the value of Fridays remaining asynchronous after the morning meeting. Finally, take time to celebrate. You have all done a tremendous job of problem-solving and thinking through the sticking points as we get ready for the third trimester. Thank you for your efforts and your dedication to your students. I could not be prouder of this incredible team and I hope you feel the love every single day! There is no other team I'd rather be with. You inspire me every day. |

February 8-12, 2021 The Weekly "Buzz" Congratulations to Super Bowl champions, Tampa Bay! It's nice to see Michigan alum and Super Bowl MVP, Tom Brady continue his success. Congrats to the winners and thank you to all who participated in our fun Super Bowl squares and to Angie and Ronda for putting it together. This week we have a Friday Early Release Day. This will be our "comp" time for the late meeting we had in October. The other buildings will be using this time to review and determine classroom furniture needs as we think about bringing all students together- this is an exercise in being prepared, this does not indicate it is happening soon. Our goal continues to be to provide increased in-person instruction when conditions allow. In order to provide our WM teachers an equitable opportunity to do this, our teachers may submit a timesheet for up to 2 hours to work on this. Please work collaboratively with your grade level/department colleagues and review THIS slideshow to guide you. As a grade level or department, please schedule a time to meet with Michelle to discuss any sticky points, ideas, etc. between now and Feb. 19th. The FSAS delivered popcorn on Friday and will be delivering scones and coffee from Brewed Awakenings Tuesday morning as a thank you for all of your efforts! Have a great week ahead! Thoughts for the week of....
January 11-15, 2021 The Weekly "Buzz" Tonight I am filled with "first day of school" excitement! It is wonderful to be able to welcome our students back to the building, even if it's only hybrid. Tomorrow we will welcome those smiling faces through our doors with full and happy hearts! For some students, they may have forgotten our classroom and school expectations. Please take time to re-teach and model the way. Don't assume they know. Also, some of us will be welcoming new students who have been virtual and have not been in to see our new safety protocols. If you are able, please help me direct students to their appropriate locations, as many do not know or may have forgotten. If you are welcoming new students, the tech department has worked hard to enroll them in your seesaw classes and other tech tools. We have run into a glitch with students who were assigned a virtual teacher from PR or HA. Those accounts did not migrate as easily and they may not be able to access Seesaw on Monday. Tech is working on this. Another exciting event this week is our annual symposium! This Friday is an early release day. Please plan to attend the virtual symposium. There a tons are terrific topics planned. Finally, Please mark your calendars! In the fall of this year, we identified that the literacy acquisition of our lower elementary students (specifically 1st & 2nd graders) were on the whole most significantly impacted by the pandemic. We want to revisit, reflect on, and plan for what this and progress to date means for our literacy instruction in the second half of the year. Please add to your calendars and plan on attending the following zoom meeting for all K-3 teachers across the district. Thoughts for the week of....
January 4-8, 2021 The Weekly "Buzz" Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year! I hope you had a great break and were able to recharge. The future looks bright as frontline workers have begun to be immunized for COVID19, and we return from break. We are hopeful for in-person instruction to begin later this month. As we return from break, be mindful of unconscious bias with regard to holidays. Try to avoid asking kids what gifts they received, as this can highlight class, cultural and financial discrepancies. Focus on how great it is to come together again, building relationships and spend time reviewing classroom culture and expectations. We need to continue to re-teach our Three "Bee"haviors and our 7 habits as students may need a "reset" after being out of school for so long. I know I am excited to return to school and see everyone again! I have enjoyed the time off, but miss our special school very much. Thank you for all you are doing, remotely (and in-person) to make this a great year of learning for our students! This truly is the best team anyone could ever hope for! 2021 is here. Let's do this! |

December14th-18th, 2020 The Weekly "Buzz" We're almost there! Five more days of outstanding teaching and learning leading into a well-earned winter break. Woohoo! We. Can. Do. This. Thank you to those of you that have started to share your weekly newsletters with me. Please add me to your parent loops so I can keep up with your classes while we are in this remote learning period. I do want to make you aware that we had a positive case (staff member) in our hornet homeroom. An investigation has been completed, close contacts have been notified and are quarantining. I am letting you know so that you can be aware, as I know many of you, like me, have been working in the building. Do not be alarmed. No transmission has been linked to our school program. Our mitigation efforts have been effective. Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions or concerns. Make this a great week and enjoy a wonderful break. As we close this unusual year, I want you to know how deeply I appreciate the work you have been doing to support our students. I continue to be inspired by you daily and I feel so fortunate to work with such and incredible group of education professionals. There is a small, but heartfelt, token of appreciation that I will be placing in your mailboxes Monday morning. Have a safe, happy holiday season. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year! |

December 6th-12th, 2020 The Weekly "Buzz" Thank you so much for the great work you are doing while continue teaching virtually. I have been popping in and out of zooms and I love seeing how all of you are keeping students engaged! Bravo! I will continue popping in. If it's a more formal observation, I will try to let you know in advance, or you can invite me to a lesson if it's something you'd like me to see or would like feedback on. Popping into zooms is one way that I am trying to keep up with all the great things going on in your classes. Another way is to keep up on your classroom newsletters. Please copy me on your communications to families to help keep me updated. Finally, the holiday season is a stressful time during any year. And this year, in the midst of a pandemic, it can be even more so. Here is a link with tips for self-care during this time of year. Remember you have to take care of yourself before helping others. Additionally, I have said numerous times as we continue to make lemonade from the truckload of lemons 2020 has brought, no one is in this alone. We are here together and we will get through this together. It is in the spirit of our collective support for one another that I invite you to "Coffee and Conversation" Wednesday morning from 8:00-8:45. This is completely optional, come prepared with any tips that have worked well for you, or bring a sticky point that we can work through together. Have a great week ahead and remember that together we can do "virtually" anything! |

November 30th- December 4th The Weekly "Buzz" As the holiday weekend draws to a close, I trust you found opportunities to reflect on the many things we have for which to be grateful, and to nurture the things we value most- our "big rocks". The mild temperatures made for another great weekend to get outdoors and sharpen the saw. But this week looks to bring a change in weather! Stay warm and stay safe as there is snow in the forecast. Also coming this week, we have put a generalized IRIP together and I will be reaching out individually to teachers to review the IRIP for their students who need them. (Y5, K and grade 1 we are putting together a foundational skills IRIP letter for everyone). Additionally, we recognize there is increased need in intervening and closing gaps like never before. And, our resources are more scarce than ever due to COVID safety precautions. With this in mind, we know that you are making adjustments to tier one instructions to meet this need. For students who continue to need additional literacy support, we have created a process to access the Lexia intervention. (This process does not replace Team W, but due to the unique challenges we are facing due to COVID it provides access in the interim). Please complete this LEXIA request FORM. Teachers monitoring Lexia will need to be trained if they have not attended training before. Erin Grunas will be providing a LEXIA training on the afternoon of December 4th. SCHECH credit will be made available. Please reach out to Erin if you have questions. Finally, this week, specials return to daily lessons found in each student's seesaw account. Specials lessons will be released Sunday nights in Seesaw for the week and here is a suggested schedule for your students to follow. The suggested schedule can be found HERE. Have a GREAT week ahead! As we continue to make lemonade, reach out for help, support, or a brainstorm of ideas whenever you need it. No one is in this alone. |

November 16th-20th AND 21st-27th The Weekly "Buzz" Another busy week is upon us at WM! This week, I want to take a moment and let you know that I am so very proud of everything each and every one of you has been doing for students. This has been a challenge in so many ways and every one of you have stepped up to the challenge to re-imagine and re-design how we serve our students and their families. This week we will host zoom parent-teacher conferences! I continue to be amazed, impressed and inspired by your professionalism and dedication. For conference dinners, PTA has also re-imagined how they approach conference dinners. They are planning on bringing in some large party subs from Tippins. Plan accordingly based on your comfort level and dietary needs. Last week, I began contacting teachers regarding IRIPS. Unfortunately, even in the midst of a global pandemic, there have not been changes to that legislation. So, we have adjusted our cut points to include a year or more behind with F&P. For first grade and Kindergarten a year behind means they are just beginning school at WM, individual IRIPS will only be for 2nd and 3rd grade students meeting the critieria (sent to you in a separate email). Second and third grade teachers who have students meeting that criteria should send me those names so we can begin the IRIP. During conferences, let families know we are working on an IRIP for their child and you will send it to them to sign and return. (I am happy to support if you would like support with this conversation). Just a reminder that we are all working together to support students and identify gaps in their learning resulting from the school closure and limited time in school in hybrid. Continue to reach out vertically to colleagues when you find gaps to see about materials or curriculum we can share to teach those skills. This is a widespread, tier 1 concern and we will need to continue to adjust instruction to support our students. I continue to be incredibly grateful to our WM team! You are amazing professionals and I am proud to work with you each day! |

I hope you were able to get outdoors and enjoy this special gift. Also, have you had time to check out our WM Thankful Padlet? You just might find that someone has left a message thanking YOU for being an amazing team member. Please check out the Padlet and add to it. We have an incredible team and I am grateful for all of you! The admin team and instructional design team are committed to collaborating with you and working to support you as we work through what needs you may have for 4 days a week instruction for in-person students. PLEASE complete the following TWO needs assessments by 5pm Friday, November 13th. Take time for yourself during this stressful time. Remember that your efforts are deeply appreciated, and though all of our roles may look and operate differently, it takes ALL of us working together as a TEAM to achieve the great success we have! November 2-6 The Weekly "Buzz" I hope you had a wonderful weekend, and very happy Halloween! Today the first snow flurries of the season glistened in the brisk air. This week, though, a warm up is predicted! It's autumn in Michigan, and anything can happen! Speaking of anything can happen, another surprise... if you were following the big rivalry game Saturday... Congratulations to the Spartan football team. A hard fought game and an unexpected win! November brings us some changes in our routines and schedules as well. We have half days November 18, 19 and 20th. Students will be dismissed at 12:10pm. No lunches on half days. Conferences are scheduled for the afternoons of the 18th and 19th, and teachers are off the afternoon of the 20th. November 24th is an asynchronous day, beginning with a live zoom morning meeting to take attendance and be sure your students know the expectations for the day, and how to access their work. The remainder of the day will be spent preparing for any changes for second trimester, including the possibility of having both groups come after the 30th. We will be completing a needs assessment as a building so we can be proactive and prepare for that scenario in advance. Finally, November is the month to give thanks. Thank you for being the incredible professionals that you are! Join me in adding to our Thankful Padlet and giving shout outs to your colleagues!!! Have a great week ahead... and always remember that I am incredibly thankful for YOU! |

October 26-30 The Weekly "Buzz" Another great week at Woodland Meadows is upon us! I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable weekend! The autumn chill has arrived. Other Halloween tricks and treats included a last minute Lions win today! Yes, really. I have included a spooky halloween video below filled with Tricks and Treats for our staff. You won't want to miss it. If you were unable to attend our optional staff meeting regarding any upcoming proposed changes to our instructional in-person model, you may check out the slideshow HERE. We will be hosting an elementary webinar forum for families on Thursday at 7:00pm. Casey and I attended a great training last week on Restorative practices. Some resources for you can be found here: Please continue to complete the COVID screening form prior to coming into work each day. Link here to important safety message to staff from district administration. As you prepare for parent-teacher conferences, please bear in mind that this is not only an expectation for our community, but it is also a contractual obligation. It is our expectation that all teachers (both in-person and virtual) be present on-site for face-to-face parent teacher conferences. (Touch base with Michelle regarding any special circumstances related to conferences.) Take a moment to look at the new DEI tab on the menu bar. Throughout the year, our building DEI team will add resources there for you to use. Have a great week ahead! |

October 19-23 The Weekly "Buzz" On this Sweetest Day weekend, I hope you all had the sweetest weekend with your sweeties! Thank you again, for your generous Boss's Day gift. I was able to buy a pair of good quality and highly cushioned walking shoes and spent the day hiking at Highland State Recreation Park. We had a great day! Thank you all so much! This week, I had a conversation with Kara Davis who suggested a podcast about Radical Acceptance. It is about 15minutes long and well worth the listen. For me, I expanded the message to extend to what is happening with the political situation in our country. I also reflected on it when I was struggling with a difficult situation for one of our students. It is focused on healthy ways to accept things out of our control and putting our best foot forward. I recommend giving it a listen! I expect Superintendent Graden to make an announcement on Monday or Tuesday to provide direction on what our school schedule will look like beyond this week. Some of you have shared concerns with me and I have been in close communication with your SEA building reps. We will have an OPTIONAL meeting Wednesday after school if anyone would like to ask questions or discuss. As always, no one is in this alone. We will all support one another. Above all else, Have fun this week! |

October 4-10 The Weekly "Buzz" A big, big thank you! To every teacher that missed the class on remote/distance/online/blended/hybrid learning in their teacher preparatory program, we see you. We hear you. We acknowledge that you are making extraordinary efforts to bring lessons, relevant content, reassurance, and stability to each student, and we thank you. You have placed your own anxieties and fears on hold while attending to the needs of each student and family. Those actions do not go unrecognized. Since 1994, October 5 is recognized as World Teacher Day. How fitting, that in the midst of a global pandemic, teachers are recognized and celebrated. We don’t say it enough. You're doing incredibly difficult things. Thank you for all that you do. This Wednesday is count day. Since at the elementary level we start every day with a morning meeting, you should not need to do anything differently. Families have been reminded of the importance of attendance at the morning meeting. Thank you! Reminders of expectations from our Continued Learning Plan:

September 27 - October 3 The Weekly "Buzz" Tomorrow will will welcome our in-person students to the building! It feels like I should be saying "the first day" but it isn't the first day- you all have been totally rockin' remote learning for three weeks now! But boy, it really does feel good to know students will be back tomorrow. For arrival, parents may not enter the building. If you are able, for this week, please come down to help us guide students so they know where to go. Classroom teachers stay visible to welcome and direct students coming into the pods, everyone else, please be inside or outside the building entrance (if you are able). This is a shift, as our parents are used to coming in. We will need help separating, especially the youngest learners. Also, it is important to note that we are required by the Michigan Return to School Roadmap, to teach about masks, social distancing and hand hygiene. Nicole and Megan will be putting some of this in our morning announcements, but here are some resources for classroom use too!
Above all else, have fun and be proud! You are doing things that have never been done before! Know in advance, that there will be bumps and hiccups. We will get through them together. No one is in this alone. It's going to be a GREAT week! |

September 20-26 The Weekly "Buzz" Another beautiful Michigan weekend has come and gone. The time sure flies on these nice weekend days! Once again, if you are looking for a sense of normalcy and routine, tune in to watch the Lions on Sunday! Some things never change! And.. some things have changed. Drastically. Our working lives look different than they ever had before. It hasn't been easy. I want you to know that your hard work is really paying off and it has not gone unnoticed. In the toughest of circumstances, you are creating meaningful learning experiences for students. Thank you. Thank you for being shelter in the storm. Thank you for stretching your creative minds and looking at how we serve our students differently. Most of all, thank you for supporting each other during these hard times. Finally, a few words about the passing of Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Without becoming too political, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the huge impact she has had. RBG is somewhat of a personal hero to me. I never met her, but I studied about her life and her life's work. I would summon her courage when I was nervous to speak. I would draw upon her persistence when feeling discouraged. RBG has impacted this nation far beyond words. Her dedication to equal rights for all rings through today as I think about our work with DEI. I encourage you to replicate her courage, bravery and persistence as we continue with our DEI work as a district. Feel free to peruse the new DEI tab on this weebly site. Thank you, Laura Laatsch, for putting it together.

September 13-18 The Weekly "Buzz" Good evening, Superheroes! Virtual instruction is a new venture for all of us and you are knocking it out of the park! I am hearing tons of compliments from our families. I am so proud of all of us, and of our families who are working hard on their end to make it a success. Bravo! One thing to remember is that some students are not "at home", so keep that in mind. Another important reminder is that everyone on our team is working harder than ever before. One thing that this situation has really highlighted is the differences between our roles. They look different, but EVERYONE is busting their tails. I had heard about some pointed comments and thought this is a good reminder. Just because we aren't seeing it, doesn't mean really hard work isn't happening. Speaking of hard work, and learning new things, I am going to be pushing out something to our students through seesaw this week. This is new to me and I am excited to learn! We have two new staff members that have joined our team! Yeah! Please welcome Marilyn to our lunch staff. She will be working with Annie this year, and welcome Floriana Salanta as our new (returned) ELL tutor. As we continue down this path, and get closer to hybrid instruction, parents who enter our building will need to complete a COVID health screening form. It is currently being developed at central office and I will let you know when it is posted. A special shout out to our small but mighty para team that have been working to making our hallways safer and compliant with COVID protocols. Additionally, they have been serving students, and supporting our teaching staff with important tasks. If you have a need for support please let me know and I will reach out to see if they can help. Great work Para team! Be sure to praise the unsung heroes. (Annie and Marilyn, and tutors too!) Have a great week ahead, remember to reach out and support one another. Reach out to me as well. September 6-12 The Weekly "Buzz" You continue to impress and inspire me. Yes, you! Last week was an incredible show of teamwork and professionalism at the highest levels. Thank you to those of you who brought in and helped set up tents and tables for the Meet and Greets. You saved the day! You are all Superheroes in my eyes. You did a great job hosting our Meet and Greet sessions. They were long days, but so, so worth it. The value in starting to build those relationships is immeasurable. You did that. Thank you. As we begin our first weeks of virtual learning, please reach to me if you need any help or support, a listening ear, a pep talk, or a cheerleader. August 23,2020 The Weekly "Buzz" Wow! I can't believe Opening Day is this week! Incredible how fast the summer has flown by. There is no doubt this is going to be a busy week! First, I'd like to welcome Erin Grunas as our Lead Literacy Tutor, she will be working with our MTSS program. Additionally, welcome Elizabeth Lombard, our new OT. Elizabeth has worked in the district and has now been assigned to Woodland Meadows. This week, we will also be interviewing for a young 5s teacher. I am excited to welcome another member to our amazing team! Looking ahead at "Welcome Week" August 31-September 3rd.... We are now looking at an outdoor option for the meet and greets. Please email me to let me know if you have and would be willing to set up an outdoor tent for this purpose. We think we will need 6 total tents outside. Our classroom teachers would briefly "meet and greet" and distribute materials/devices. We may have a sign up for additional staff to help direct people. We are being very cautious to limit the amount of people assembling, and are trying to prevent it from becoming an "open house" for safety reasons. Welcome week PD for staff: We encourage staff to attend these LIVE, If staff cannot make any of these trainings, they can watch the recording (to be viewed by end of weekend Sept 6th) First Response (Karan Hervey) – All Grades 9/1 -Tuesday 9-10:15

August 16,2020 The Weekly "Buzz" Welcome back! I'm overdue for our first weekly buzz! It's now mid- August (believe it or not!). I hope that all of you have taken time to Sharpen the Saw and engage in self-care. Wow... It's hard to believe how fast time flies and how much has happened since our last weekly buzz. It has been a beautiful summer. Yesterday, after a passing storm, I took this photo. I though how much it reminded me of our situation. We have been in the eye of a storm. The abrupt end to in-person instruction, the crisis mode we entered for distance learning, and the uncertainty throughout this whole situation. And, after the storm... an image of beauty. This is where we are now. I am so impressed with how our team of educators have come together, reached out to me, offering to do whatever it takes to support our students. The training, the flexibility, the commitment to making it work. The dedication has truly been awe-inspiring. You are such an amazing team and I am so proud to work with you!
Have a great week ahead! Thanks for all of your support! You are an amazing team! |
